On Friday 24th November, we were delighted to host a number of our close partners and supporters to the official re-launch of the newly refurbished Knowsley Outdoor Education Centre (KOEC) on the private Knowsley Park Estate in Prescot. In attendance were local headteachers, council officials, business leaders and many of our friends who have spent time at KOEC in the past helping young people to achieve many great things in outdoor education. We were also delighted to welcome 'The Right Honourable The Earl of Derby DL' who officially opened the centre and also took the opportunity to launch the brand new Lord Derby Award, which is now available exclusively through Knowsley Youth Mutual (click here for contact details).

KOEC is a unique outdoor experience, which provides visitors with a chance to push boundaries, grow confidence and discover capabilities in a safe and affirming environment.

Established over 20 years ago and recently redeveloped, KOEC is situated close to Knowsley Safari Park in Liverpool. Our fantastic new centre is located in mature woodland next to a large enclosed lake, where visitors can enjoy canoeing, raft building, power boating all on the very sheltered waters of the lake, and/or experience archery, orienteering, bushcraft and the ‘fire-pit’, in a unique natural habitat close to wildlife.

The Lord Derby Award is exclusive and unique to KYM. The Award is aimed primarily at young people aged 9-13 years, but not exclusively, so if you think this may work for a specific group please get in touch. We hope that the worthwhile activities experienced and new skills developed whilst gaining the award, will encourage younger people to think about going on to participate in and achieve the Duke of Edinburgh Award, when they are older.

The Lord Derby Award is comprised of 4 progressive award levels (Pink, Blue, Purple and Yellow) and is made up of four sections:

Skill - learning something new;
Physical - getting involved;
Adventurous Activities - trying something different;
Community - doing something to help others. This award is designed for young people who want to push personal boundaries, gain new skills and embrace personal challenges.

The ceremony also marked the naming of the new building as 'The Keith Jackson Centre' in memory of a valued colleague who worked at KOEC for many years  and touched the lives of so many local young people with his passion for the outdoors. We were delighted to welcome Keith's wife Jenny and her family to the event where they witnessed the naming in person by Lord Derby.

We hope the launch will be the beginning of many new visitors to our fantastic centre. To learn more about all that is on offer at KOEC, or to get invloved in the new Lord Derby Award, please head to where you will find all of the contact details or to submit a web based enquiry, which will be sent directy to our Outdoor Education & Activities Manager.
